Callmeearl.org is the online blog for Earl Studios and Earl Studios Photography. The purpose of the site is to bring you a behind the scenes look at the projects going on at Earl Studios, and also to give you a behind the scences look at running a small new media company in New Hamphsire...
The summer is here and its finally time to get out and do some outside photos. I was lucky enough to work with a local college superstar soccer athlete on some sports marketing commercial type images. The images were shot at a local feild down the road from my studio in the afternoon. They were shot using a d300, 24-70 f2.8, 2 ab800’s, med soft boxes with the sun behind the model. The photos were meant to have a “nike ad/poster” type feel, and represent a direction i’m looking to go in with my work, more fitness and sports marketing type images.

As we/I/Earl Studios expands into food/culinary videography and video production I am doing some testing with the new high definition video camera. I did the test footage at Fredericks Pastires in Amherst (my favorite group of people) today when were prepping an amazing cake for the Palace Theatre. I apologize for the cheesy music, I was cutting together the footage very quick to test the white balance under the florescent lights and other settings. I am very happy with the footage from the quick test, so enjoy!
Here at Earl Studios we made the switch to High Definition video production this past month, adding a high def video camera to the list, as well as a high def tv for project review and high def editing equipment. For the next year we are going to be doing lots of short peices to build up the expereince and footage sample lists, and just to get experience shooting and editing in high def. Being a dad, alot of the short pieces will be stuff with my kids, or stuff with food :-). So i hope you enjoy the first test project, “the Mayhews go to UNH hockey”!

This past shoot was for deli sandwich, just generic cold cut sandwhichs, nothing spectacular, just trying to test to see how it lights and stuff. The biggest thing i wanted to try was getting the sandwhich made right, with the lettuce and the folds in the meat right, its tricky you know! haa. Because these shots are just for my port and for practice, I don’t always buy the best top of the line stuff. The cold cuts are precut 3 dollar turkey from walmart, the bread is shockingly walmart wheat bread, pretty much everything from the test shoots is from walmart. The sandwhich is only constructed of half a side, its held up by toothpicks to keep if fluffy and tall. I tried chips and mesculin salad mix. The table dressing is just some blue cloth from…(everybody now!) walmart! haa haa. the lighting is one ab800 camera left set very low with a large octobx, 1 ab800 into a med softbox from the back set at low power, and one white board for bounce to camera right.
